Is Pilates for me?

Pilates is for everyone and I offer classes for all ages and abilities, whether you're pregnant, just had a baby or keen to simply improve your body or enhance your flexibility and stability for sport.

Pilates creates a strong, flexible and stable body. Regular practice can reduce back pain, prevent injuries and improve sporting performance.

Is it safe for me to do pilates?

Physiotherapists such as myself, as well as doctors, will often recommend Pilates as a form of exercise, especially for women who are pregnant or are postnatal and also for people who suffer with lower back pain. If you are unsure please do consult with your GP or medical practitioner before trying these classes.

It's important to build up your practice slowly starting with the foundation levels and ability appropriate classes. Pilates should be challenging but it should not be painful. If certain exercises cause pain please stop, attempt an easier version of the exercise if available or simply stop and rest. If unsure, please consult your GP or another relevant medical practitioner, such as your Physiotherapist.

I am always happy to answer questions so don't hesitate to email me at [email protected] and I will do my best to help.

Can I still do pilates if I have a bad back?

As a Chartered Physiotherapist I regularly recommend Pilates for spinal pain. I offer adaptive controlled and progressive classes starting from simple stretches and building up slowly and safely. Do check with your own health care professional before starting if you are concerned.

I am pregnant, can I do Pilates?

As a Chartered Physiotherapist and mother of three, I know first hand the amazing benefits safe exercise in pregnancy offers. Pilates is the perfect pregnancy workout - my specialised classes aim to strengthen, stabilise and form muscles of support for a strong pelvis and core, to keep your lower back happy throughout the pregnancy and help facilitate the best delivery and speediest recovery possible.

When is it safe to start Pilates after having my baby?

It is essential to follow your midwife, Physio and/or Doctor's advice on when it's safe to return to exercise. It is usual to wait until after your six-week postnatal check before you start any high-impact exercise.

As a Chartered Physiotherapist I have created educational, safe and restorative classes that you can begin in the those early 0-6 weeks postnatal. These exercises follow NHS advice, which states pelvic floor and deep abdominal exercises will help you return to your pre-pregnancy shape and assist with healing around any stitches you may have.

How long until I start to see/feel the benefits of Pilates?

You will notice you always feel better after exercise and this is due to the endorphins (naturally occurring happy chemicals) released in your body - regular practice will build strength, tone and stability. You will increase your postural awareness and walk that little bit taller!

Joseph Pilates famously said: "You will feel better in ten sessions, look better in twenty sessions, and have a completely new body in thirty sessions."

So keep going and trust the process, because a new and stronger body is achievable!
